Grosvenor Recreation Ground was officially opened on 29th June 1889, and to mark the date Friends of Grosvenor and Hilbert Park (as it is now known) had a community picnic, with birthday cake and games. The weather stayed fine, and a wide range of ages came along with chairs, rugs and lunches. There was talk of what might happen in the next 125 years; there has been a lot of residential building in the area recently. The park is protected to be a green space for the town, but how many more houses and flats will be squeezed in around it? We reflected on the difference between our party, and what the original opening ceremony would have been like, and even the changes within the park (where our picnic was used to be a swimming pool, and the pavilion behind us built in the 1970s and now due for a re-furb).
In a similar reflective mood, I look at my photo and wonder why I didn’t try a different angle, so there was less gazebo roof….
